The Artist is Present: BP in the Gulf of Mexico

Thursday May 27th - 9PM
The Gulf of Mexico Online

Red Channels is happy to announce its partnership with BP in presenting its most recent work, a video installation in the Gulf of Mexico. This work is being presented as a live video feed on the Red Channels website, following successful runs at NPR and PBS.

Taking its cue from Marina Abramovic's recent performance retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, BP wished to experiment with its own unprecedented and physically demanding performance piece, made available internationally as a live stream.

BP's work revolves around the bizarre love triangle of technology, humans, and the environment. Best known for its exploitation of natural resources, BP wished to give its audience the opportunity to experience its process with heretofore unavailable immediacy. "Our work has always been process oriented, but we felt this process lacked a certain level of transparency," offered a representative.

BP's art practice comes out of a tradition of materialist aesthetics, where its form and political focus is in the uncovering of the apparatus of its transmission. "With this new piece we have achieved a unity of form and content which we believe will lead to a series of installation work combining environmental and performance art on an international scale."

The piece has already received staggering reviews, including around-the-clock international coverage, and commentary from the most influential critics and heads of state. "Following the media sensation that was Hurricane Katrina, we felt the Gulf was the ideal location for our work."

This marks the first live broadcast presented by Red Channels, with more to come. More information will be revealed as it flows through.
